A life story like no other

Sometimes author Jenny Old isn't sure how she survived.

Taking time to write her memoir - Back of Beyond - has forced the 72-year-old to look back upon her life and the challenges she faced moving to the Gulf Country of far north Queensland.

Born and raised in Deniliquin, Jenny said she got the shock of her life when she moved to the Gulf after falling in love with her husband Rick.

She had no idea of the primitive conditions she'd find herself in or that her only contact with the outside world was through a two-way radio or that they'd encounter many disasters such as drought and cyclones

"Sometimes I look back and I wonder how I survived," she said.

"How I did it all and how I got through. Writing and looking back was very challenging but there were many highlights as well.

"I was lucky that both our mothers kept the letters that I wrote home so I had plenty to go off."

Jenny said she had always planned to write a book but it was never a priority. When she finally decided to sit down and write, the process took her about a year.

She initially self-published and sold more than 2000 copies before being picked up by Allen & Unwin. In the middle of a book tour up the east coast, Jenny is pleased how many people have enjoyed her book.

Jenny will be at Wodonga Library on Wednesday, July 25 from 2pm to 3pm. Books will be available for purchase at the event.
