New strategy to tackle city’s housing issues

A strategy to maintain and enhance housing affordability was adopted by Wodonga Council at its December meeting.

Covering land choice, supply, diversity, affordable housing, quality and sustainability, A Place to Call Home – Wodonga Housing Strategy is an integrated approach to housing and affordable housing to address the needs of the community, mirroring the Victorian Government’s approach through Homes for Victorians which aims to increase affordability, access and choice.

The strategy identifies a range of objectives and actions in each of the focus areas to ensure the Wodonga community’s housing needs are addressed as the city grows.

The Quality chapter is supported 43 neighbourhood character profiles across the city.

The Sustainability chapter was informed by the Environmentally Sustainable Design for Subdivisions in Regional Victoria project undertaken by Wodonga Council, Greater Bendigo, Ballarat Council, Baw Baw Council, Greater Shepparton, Wangaratta Council, Moorabool Council and AECOM.

The project recently received a Commendation in the Best Planning Ideas – Large Project category at the 2018 Victorian Awards for Planning Excellence.

The annual awards demonstrate leading practice, leadership and achievement in planning and recognise excellence and showcase leading practice across a range of planning disciplines and sectors.
