Works begin to revamp laneway

Works will begin on Monday to revamp Bennetts Lane off High St.

The lane will be closed until August 1 while the walls are rendered and painted.

This will be a blank canvas for a street art project that will start in the coming weeks.

Pedestrians are asked to use the lane alongside Wodonga Place (Woolworths) development.

The works are part of the council’s laneways project which recognises laneways provide opportunities for unique public spaces and aims to maintain and enhance existing laneways.

Away from the hustle and bustle of streets and main roads, laneways can offer intimate spaces for pedestrians, further activate the CBA via potential provision of a diversified (small and micro scale) retail premises offerings, and allow for convenient short cut routes to adjoining streets and key destinations.

These opportunities are recognised in the Council Plan 2017-2021 and identified in the CBA Revitalisation Plan and Design Guide.

The council is working with landlords to improve the amenity and activate the laneways to further enhance the city centre.

Future works could include pedestrian connectivity, beautification, lighting, public art or promoting quality building edges within laneways.

The city centre has eight laneways connecting High St to parking and adjoining streets.
